The captain, absent from play since having a shoulder operation in the start of May, has come back to provincial training, but it remains unclear whether he will be fit to face New Zealand in Chicago on 1 November. Second row McCarthy, however, was not considered after failing to recover from the foot injury suffered during the opening British and Irish Lions Test against the Wallabies in the summer. Ulster player Cormac Izuchukwu and Munster winger Calvin Nash are not included due to fitness concerns, and full-back Hugo Keenan was previously excluded after undergoing hip surgery following the summer tour. Dublin province prop McCarthy - the brother of Joe - is the only uncapped player in the 34-player squad, but Irish rugby authorities says new Munster pair Edwin Edogbo and Gleeson and previously capped western province winger Shayne Bolton will head to the US as "backup". After facing the All Blacks at the Chicago stadium in a repeat of their previous meeting, Ireland host the Brave Blossoms, Australia and world champions the Springboks in Dublin. "It's an exciting group to the panel and there's an opportunity for the more experienced members and for those who made their debuts on the recent tour to Georgia and Portugal," said Farrell, back to national team duties after a break to coach the Lions tour to Australia. Provincial forward McCarthy is the sole uncapped player in the squad In a largely familiar-looking squad, the Dublin club's Sam Prendergast and Munster's Jack Crowley will again compete for the first-choice number 10 position. The fly-half role is still available, with Prendergast and Crowley set to face off for the first occasion in the upcoming United Rugby Championship match at Croke Park. Ciaran Frawley is the third fly-half chosen with Farrell deciding not to calling up the province's Harry Byrne. At number 9, the Ireland boss has selected British and Irish Lion Jamison Gibson-Park and Casey, who led the national side to the summer international victories over the Lelos and the Lobos. There is also a return for Connacht's Caolin Blade, chosen to club-mate Murphy. Robbie Henshaw, Aki, Ringrose and McCloskey form an veteran group of centre options. Osborne is a further choice in the midfield, though the youngster is also a frontrunner to deputise for Keenan at full-back. Wingers James Lowe, Mack Hansen, Tommy O'Brien and Stockdale are included. The winger impressed on his first Ireland outings over the summer with a brace each in the victories over the Lelos and Portugal. Paddy McCarthy is the only fresh addition in the Ireland pack. The loose-head prop has been in a couple of Leinster's URC United Rugby Championship games so far and featured in Ireland A's defeat by the English in Bristol earlier this year. The 22-year-old was selected in interim boss Paul O'Connell's summer squad, but did not receive a cap. Southern province second row Thomas Ahern, who received his debut appearances in those Tests, is retained, and experienced Ulster lock Henderson is back after sitting out the summer matches. Jack Conan, who started each of the Lions Tests during the tour, is poised to deputise for the captain should the captain does not regain fitness soon enough to play New Zealand. The Ireland squad will assemble in the capital on the start of the week before flying to Chicago on Tuesday.
